Colorado man struck by lighting dies while on honeymoon in Florida
(COLORADO) — A Colorado man celebrating his honeymoon in Florida died when he was struck by lightning.
The 29-year-old man was a tourist from Colorado visiting Florida on his honeymoon. According to Fox News, the man was struck by lightning on Friday afternoon, June 20, while he was standing in ankle-deep water.
The couple was at New Smyrna Beach when the incident occurred. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.
“Saying a prayer for this young man and his wife,” Mike Chitwood, Sheriff of Volusia County, wrote via Facebook. “They were visiting our beaches to celebrate their marriage. In one terrifying second, everything changed. My heart goes out to them tonight. I also want to thank everyone who worked so quickly to render aid and get him to the hospital for a fighting chance.”
The man was the first person to die by lightning in Florida in 2025. This is the fourth fatality by lightning across the U.S. in 2025, with other deaths being reported in North Carolina, Missouri, and Texas, according to the National Weather Service.
That same day, two other people were also “indirectly struck” by lightning in New Smyrna Beach.
On Monday, four more people were struck by lightning four more people, including one who was hospitalized. Lighting kills about 20 people a year.
Most lightning occurs in the summer; however, people can be struck at any time of the year, according to the National Weather Service.
